Argos Advance To GSC Championship With Shootout Win vs. UAH

UWF and Spring Hill will meet for conference title Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – UWF men's soccer advanced to the Gulf South Conference championship match with a thrilling shootout win vs. Alabama Huntsville Friday night at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex in Montgomery. The Argos will take on top seed Spring Hill for the conference title Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

"Just really happy for our guys," said UWF head coach Bill Elliott. "We got a goal in the first half, they got a goal in the second half. Both teams had some chances, and then you go into overtime and penalty kicks. I don't think anyone really likes deciding a game like that, but obviously we're the happier of the two teams since it went our way."

Rafael Godoi opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, poking one past UAH keeper Myles Fullen on a feed from Andrew Wentz. Godoi's fifth goal of the year put the Argos up 1-0 but did not come without a cost. GSC Player of the Year Sean Hoffstatter was injured challenging Fullen for the ball during the scoring sequence and exited the game. He would not return. UWF outshot Alabama Huntsville 9-1 in the first half.

The Argo lead would not survive much past intermission. The Chargers evened the score with a goal by Khalil Bell just 90 seconds into the second.

The Argos would outshoot the Chargers 10-5 in the second half, but the teams headed to a pair of overtimes tied 1-1. UWF staved off four Charger shots in the first overtime to maintain the tie. The Argos outshot UAH 5-0 in the second OT but the contest proceeded to a shootout.

Redshirt senior keeper Jacob Murray starred for UWF in net, saving two of the four penalties he faced.

"Jacob came up huge. We know he is a big time penalty kick saver, and he's very good at it," said Elliott. "He came up with a couple of them tonight, and that's the difference. That's us moving on."

Gavin Gillies, Ed Chappe, Kameron Bethell and Ryan Sandidge combined to convert all penalties taken by UWF to win the shootout 4-2.

"We're just excited to still be playing," said Elliott. "There are an awful lot of teams out there whose season is finished, and we're glad we're not one of them."

West Florida and Spring Hill will meet for the second time this season Sunday. UWF men's soccer fell Oct. 20 in Mobile. The Argos overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit before ultimately falling in overtime 5-4 to the Badgers. The loss was the first for the Argos since Sep. 7 and the only for the program during the conference regular season.

The program is seeking the 10th GSC championship of head coach Bill Elliott's tenure, and its first since 2013.
