PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team used a fast start for a big lead and never let up in an 81-46 win over Christian Brothers in the Gulf South Conference opener for both squads at the UWF Field House on Thursday.
UWF (5-1, 1-0) got out to a 16-9 lead midway through the opening quarter and then closed the frame on a 18-3 run, which included 11-consecutive to lead 34-12.
The strong defense continued in the second quarter as the Argonauts held the Lady Bucs to nine points on 3-of-13 shooting and a pair of free throws.
Toni Brewer and
Halee Nieman combined for 44 points and 18 rebounds and led the inside surge that featured 40 points in the paint. Brewer posted her fifth double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Belle Bistrow made three 3-pointers and had 17 points, while
Anna Hall finished with eight points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.
CBU (2-1, 0-1) shot a season-low 28 percent and allowed a season-high 81 points. Kelsey Adkins had 11 points to lead the Lady Bucs' offense.
UWF will turn its attention to Saturday and a visit from No. 1 ranked Union (6-0). Tip-off at the UWF Field House is set for 2:00 p.m.
