Top-Ranked Union Gets Past UWF, 81-62

The Argonauts shot 38 percent


PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team suffered an 81-62 loss to No. 1 ranked Union at the UWF Field House on Saturday.
 
UWF (5-2, 1-1 Gulf South) led for just over seven minutes in the first quarter and tied the game three times in the second but were never able to regain the edge in the final 24 minutes.
 
The Argos shot 38 percent and ended the game tied with 34 rebounds.
 
Toni Brewer had 17 points and five rebounds to lead UWF. Halee Nieman scored 13 and grabbed six rebounds, while Anna Hall netted 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Nieman and Hall each had three steals.

Danielle Norquest had her second double-figure scoring game of the season with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes..
 
Union (7-0, 2-0) shot 54 percent and was 12-of-13 at the free throw line.
 
Jada Smith scored a game-high 24 points with eight boards and six assists. Morgan Martin shot 8-of-10 and had her second double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
 
After Union scored the first four points of the game, UWF went on a 10-0 run which featured a pair of 3 pointers from Nieman and Hall. The lead reached seven at he 4:30 mark of the quarter before the Bulldogs came back to tie thing up at 17. Union closed the frame on a 6-0 run thanks to a pair of buckets in the paint from Smith, including a buzzer-beater for a 23-20 lead.
 
In the second quarter, UWF tied the game three times with the final one coming at 30-30 with just under five minutes to play. From there the Lady Bulldogs went on an 11-0 run before taking a 43-33 lead into the locker room.
 
UWF never got closer than seven in the second half.
 
UWF will step out of conference play for a pair of home games next week, beginning Wednesday against Tuskegee. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is set for 11:00 a.m. No. 12 Columbus State will pay a visit to campus on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
