Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's basketball dropped a heartbreaker vs. the Union Bulldogs 63-62 Saturday evening in the UWF Field House.
Jarrett Henderson recorded his second straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
UWF led 62-56 with 2:04 to go before Union reeled off a 7-0 run to end the game. The stretch was capped by a layup from Terrandus Smith with three seconds to play. The refereeing crew initially assessed a charge on the drive and waved the basket off only to ultimately reverse the call and count the game-winning bucket plus a foul.
"The guys played really hard and deserved to win. Got it taken from us," said UWF head coach
Jeff Burkhamer on the late controversial call. "It's too bad for our players because they deserved to win. We had a lot of guys play hard, and to get a game taken from us at home is very difficult."
Smith was one of three double-figure scorers for the Bulldogs (5-3, 1-1 GSC). Bryson Butler scored a game-high 16 points, mostly on the strength of 8-of-8 shooting from the line.
West Florida led 32-30 at half.
Rashaan Benson and Henderson each notched seven first half points.
UWF won the rebounding battle 44-32. Henderson and
Jon Brown combined for 23 rebounds. Brown registered his first double-double of the season, adding 11 points to his 10 boards.
West Florida (3-4, 0-2 GSC) heads to Morehouse next weekend for a matchup with the host Maroon Tigers (5-1, 1-1 SIAC) at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. CT. The team will take on Lane College (5-2, 4-0 SIAC) Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. CT.
"We need to work on everything," said Burkhamer. "We're going to play Morehouse, who's an NCAA Tournament team last year, and Lane's already beaten Christian Brothers, who we lost to, so we've got a lot of work to do. Hopefully we'll go up there and play better."
