CLEVELAND, Tenn. –
Toni Brewer took over in the second half of UWF's big regional game at Lee, scoring 19 of her game-high 25 in the second half to help the Argonauts to a 76-70 road win at Walker Arena on Monday night.
Brewer registered her eighth double-double of the year with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting and 12 rebounds. She made her first eight shots, including a stretch where she scored 10-consecutive points for the Argos to spark a 15-6 run and put the momentum squarely with UWF as it ended the third quarter with a 49-42 lead.
"She's coming into her own and playing good basketball by bringing everything to the table," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "And she's doing it on both ends of the floor which is great."
Brewer's career rebounding total now stands at 999, just seven shy of breaking UWF's career mark of 1,005 held by her former teammate
Katie Bobos.
UWF never let the Lady Flames back into the game thanks to some clutch free throw shooting. The Argos made 25-of-29 and were 18-of-20 in the fourth quarter and drained all 12 over the final 1:45 to keep the Flames at a slow simmer.
"We executed well all night," Yelton said. "We were pushing it when we needed to and when we had opportunities at the free throw line we took advantage."
UWF (9-2, 3-1 Gulf South) shot 47 percent and had 15 assists on 22 field goals. The Argos continued to control the glass, holding a 38-31 rebounding edge.
In addition to Brewer,
Belle Bistrow had 19 points and
Halee Nieman scored 16. Bistrow got the Argos going early on, making all four of her 3-pointers in the opening quarter as they built a 20-18 lead.
Lee took a 36-33 advantage into the half after closing the second quarter on a 10-4 run.
Lee (8-3, 3-1) was led in scoring by Abby Bertram and Haley Schubert who finished with 14 apiece. The Lady Flames were just 6-of-19 from outside and 8-of-14 at the free throw line.
UWF collected its first win at Lee in six all-time meetings. Lee and UWF entered the game tied for third in the WBCA South Region rankings behind Union and Florida Southern.
The Argos will be off for just over two weeks before returning to play on Thursday, Jan. 3 at Valdosta State (7-4, 2-2). Tip-off at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga. Is set for 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
