Brewer Sets UWF Career Rebounding Record in Loss at Valdosta State

Toni Brewer became the program’s all-time leading rebounder in the contest


VALDOSTA, Ga.– On a night that Toni Brewer became the all-time leading rebounder at UWF, the Argonauts' had its worst shooting performance of the season in falling to Valdosta State, 68-58, at The Complex Thursday night.
 
UWF (9-3, 3-2 Gulf South) shot just 36 percent and was outrebounded for the first time in 12 games.
 
"We had a poor shooting night and there's not much else we can say," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "It was just one of those nights that no player or coach wants to experience."
 
Brewer and Halee Nieman led the team with 15 points apiece, while Brewer's 12 rebounds pushed her past former teammate Katie Bobos into first place on the career rebounding list at UWF. She now has 1,011 and also moved past Bobos on the career scoring list into fifth place with 1,356 points.
 
Danielle Norquest was the only other player in double figures for UWF as she finished with 11.
 
UWF shot just 22 percent in the first quarter but only trailed 16-13. The Argos held the Lady Blazers to 3-of-12 shooting in the second quarter but sent the home team to the line 14 times where they made nine freebies. VSU led 31-26 at the half.
 
VSU used a 9-2 run early in the third to stretch its lead to 15 points. The Argos never got closer than eight the rest of the game.
 
VSU (9-4, 3-2) shot 42 percent and held a 41-36 rebounding edge. Sonya Franklin led the Lady Blazers with 19 points.
 
The Argonauts will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Montevallo (8-4, 4-1) at the UWF Field House. Tip-off for the contest is set for 2 p.m.
