UWF Unable to Contain Mississippi College in 59-55 Loss

The Argonauts were outscored 19-9 in the third quarter

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College outscored UWF 19-10 in the third quarter and defeated the Argonauts 59-55 at A.E. Wood Coliseum Wednesday night.

UWF led 38-34 with 3:30 left in the third quarter, but MC closed the frame on a 11-3 run to take a 45-41 lead – it's first since 2-0. The Lady Choctaws never trailed again. UWF closed to within one point twice in the final minute and had the ball down by two with 10.1 seconds left but turned it over on the inbounds and MC made two free throws to account for the final score.

UWF (15-8, 10-8 Gulf South) was led in scoring by Belle Bistrow, who had 11 points with three 3-pointers. Halee Nieman had nine points and seven rebounds, Mississippi native Shaniqua Magee also had nine. Courtney Meyer and Jade Davis added eight points each.

The Argonauts shot 32 percent in the game and just 23 percent in the second half.

Mississippi College (9-15, 5-13) shot 43 percent in the second half to earn its first win over UWF since December of 2014. Moriah Hurst had 13 points and eight boards to lead MC in both categories.

As they did in Saturday's loss to West Georgia, UWF came out on fire, getting two triples and eight points from Bistrow in the first three minutes to stake a 10-3 lead. The Argos closed the period on a 7-1 run and led 24-10 early in the second. But a 16-3 Lady Choctaw run midway through the second trimmed the UWF lead to 27-26 late in the half. The Argos led 32-26 at the break.

After a 3-game road swing, UWF will return home for Senior Day on Saturday against No. 6/12 Union (24-2, 17-1). Tip-off at the UWF Field House is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the UWF Sports Network, Choice 106.9 FM and WRNE 980 AM.

The program will recognize its Senior Class in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
