UWF Baseball Makes It Two Straight vs. Spring Hill

Argos score season-high 11 runs, Pahlad picks up first college win

PENSACOLA, Fla.— UWF baseball (4-6) made it two in a row with an 11-2 win over Spring Hill (2-8) at Jim Spooner Field Thursday. The Argos will open conference play Sunday and Monday in Florence vs. North Alabama.

"Quality work tonight by our team," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "That's something we've been working for and finally got that in the tenth game of the year."

Dylan Mills-Derouen started the game for the Argos. The junior transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College went three innings, striking out three and walking one. He gave up two doubles but no runs.

Josh Pahlad (1-0) entered in the fourth and pitched a perfect two innings to pick up the win. The freshman faced seven in the middle innings and used just 11 pitches to stymie the Badgers. Five Argo relievers appeared after Pahlad, combining for four strikeouts, three walks, two hits and two earned runs over the game's final four innings.

"We got a lot of pitchers in there. We kind of planned it out where Mills was only going to go three and then start going to the bullpen and getting guys work for an inning apiece," said Jeffcoat. "Josh Pahlad got his first taste of college baseball. He did fine work for two innings there."

The Argo bats may have been even more impressive than the arms. The team's 11 runs were a season-high. Seven Argos combined for a total of 12 hits on the game. Robert Lopez went two for two with two doubles and three runs scored, and Nick Kirkmann added a pair of singles plus three RBIs.

Badger starter Jonathan Williams (0-2) suffered the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks over four innings.

The Argos scored three in the second on RBIs by Lopez and Harmon plus a Badger error. The team added three more in the fourth in an inning highlighted by multiple walks from Badger pitching and two RBIs from Kerkmann. The Argos iced the game in the eighth with five runs. Mason Dinesen and Matt Sullivan each picked up extra-base hits in the frame.

UWF baseball will open the GSC schedule at North Alabama Sunday and Monday. The Argos and Lions will meet in a doubleheader beginning Sunday at 3:00 p.m. and conclude play with a single game Monday at 2:00 p.m.

"What we're looking for is for them to go out and compete and represent," said Jeffcoat about his expectations for the team in Florence. "I think we've gotten back to that at this point. It doesn't guarantee a win, but we can certainly hold our head up high if we go out and compete like we did tonight."
