LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 5 ranked UWF Women's Tennis (8-0) continues an impressive 25 consecutive match winning streak with a 5-4 victory over No. 15 ranked Florida Southern (2-2). The matchup with the Mocs closed a busy weekend for UWF Tennis in South Florida.
The Mocs are currently fifth in the region behind the third ranked Argos. The fitness of the Argos was tested after competing in two matches in the previous two days, but their performance on the court proved they had prepared well for the matchup.
From the first point in doubles, the intensity of the matches was apparent from both the players and the fans. The Argos grabbed the first point of the day, coming from Diana Vlad and Samantha Echevarria on court three as they closed out Asis and Lorena 8-5. The Mocs, however, snatched the next two doubles points on courts one and two, gaining a 2-1 lead entering into the singles matches. Paula Coyos and Jordana Lujan fell 8-4 to Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, while Ines Nicault and Valeria Mantilla fell to Nina Schwab and Magda Stepnik 8-5.
The No. 15 Mocs extended a 3-1 advantage after taking court four. The Argos, however, came prepared to grind out the remaining matches, and Lujan and Nicault quickly added two more points to the overall score. With the score tied up at 3-3, two of the three remaining matches were battling in third sets.
Despite trailing a break 2-3 in the deciding set, No. 11 Coyos captured the last four games of the match to take down No. 13 Nionova. The Argos needed only one of the two remaining matches to secure a victory over the Mocs. The clinch came from court five as Heather Mixon crushed a forehand passing shot just out of reach of Stepnik.
The Argos will rest up for a few days before opening with their first home match of the season on Saturday, March 3 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. Play is set to begin at 1 pm CT.
