PENSACOLA, Florida – The No. 5 UWF Women's Tennis (13-0) remains perfect after their double-header on Saturday against Illinois-Springfield University (9-5) and long-time rivals No. 13 St. Leo University (8-3).
For the first match of the day, an overcast morning slightly delayed the Argos play against Illinois Springfield University. This suspension, however, had no effect on their play as they raced through every doubles match. On courts 1 and 3, each Argo duo only dropped a single game. On court two Ines Nicault and Valeria Mantilla finished off Thornhill and Bere 8-2..
The confidence from the doubles was passed on to the singles players. On court 3 three, Heather Mixon, although battling through a tight 7-5 first set, ran away with the second set to earn the Argos their first singles point. Lais Bicca, performing in her debut singles match for the 2018 season, clinched with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Blythe on court six.
Just two hours later, the Argos were back on the court to face off against regional rivals No. 13 St. Leo. In the doubles, No. 12 Paula Coyos and Jordana Lujan improved their doubles record to nine wins with only two losses on court one by cruising past Pindelska and Gauthier 8-3. Nicault and Mantilla also picked up another point on court two by eliminating a crafty Miquel and Gordan with a score of 8-5. A back and forth clash escalated from court three, and Vlad and Echevarria were edged 8-6 by an undefeated Jurkova and Vliestra.
After emerging 2-1 up after the doubles, UWF placed all of their remaining energy into the final six singles matches. Seniors No. 11 Coyos and Lujan were the only two Argos to rally past their opponents in straight sets. No. 11 Coyos snapped Miguel's five match winning streak playing at number one, pounding past her with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. For the ninth time this season, Nicault captured the clinching point on court two. After losing an hour long first set, the French native bounced back to take the match 6-3, 6-1 in the final two sets. After the outcome of the match was decided, the remaining three matches were all fighting in third sets against their Lion opponents. GSC Player of the Week Mixon pushed past a weary Gordan 6-3 in the deciding set. St. Leo picked up 2 singles points after closing out intense matches on courts 4 and 5.
This is the first time since 2013 that the Women's Team has defeated St. Leo, and they have done so in dominating fashion. They also snap the Lion's five match winning streak for this 2018 season and increase their record to 13-0.
Northeastern State University is the next contestant for the Argos, and they will face off against each other on Tuesday, March 20th at 1 pm eastern time at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
