PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball (12-8, 4-2 GSC) made it seven straight wins with a 12-7 victory over No. 16 Southern Indiana (5-6) Wednesday at Jim Spooner Field. Matt Sullivan racked up three hits, including a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in the win.
"We're really swinging the bats up and down the lineup, putting pressure on the defense," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "They got a couple early runs, and we were able to comeback and answer there, and the big eight-run inning took them out of it, I think, and opened the scoring up big time there."
The Argos fell behind 2-0 out of the gate before tying the game on a 2-RBI single by Mason Dinesen in the bottom of the second. The team got solo homers from Brandon Harmon and Sullivan in the third to build a 4-2 lead.
The Argos exploded for eight runs on eight hits against Screaming Eagles starter Nick Gobert (0-2) and three relievers in the fourth. The hit parade included an RBI triple by Joey Bend, who has now picked up at least one RBI in each of his last eight games, as well as a two-RBI base hit from Bryant Harris, Jr.
Jared Middleton got the start for the Argos and 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (three earned). Jared Gonzalez (1-0) earned the win after entering the game in the fourth and exiting in the sixth. He scattered three hits and allowed two runs (two earned).
Chase Evans allowed one run (one earned) on one hit over 1.2 innings before Alex Knight and Matthew Estrada finished the game with a scoreless frame each.
Dinesen finished the contest with 3 RBIs, a season-high. Matthew Jones, who had two homers in the series opener, finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored. The Argos have now piled up 99 hits over the seven-game winning streak after outhitting the Screaming Eagles 14-11. There were no errors committed in the game.
UWF will return to GSC play this weekend at Christian Brothers (5-12, 1-5 GSC). The series has undergone significant scheduling changes due to the threat of inclement weather. The series will now begin with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. The series will close with a single game Monday at noon.
