PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team will wrap up its regular season with a three-game series against Valdosta State at the UWF Softball Complex on Saturday and Sunday. The team will also celebrate Senior Day following the series finale on Sunday.
Action will begin at 1 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, and fans who cannot attend the weekend series can follow along with live stats and a live video broadcast for all three games at GoArgos.com/Live.
Our Seniors
* UWF will celebrate the careers of seniors
Tiona Hill,
Sarah Maloney and
Meghan Toney at the conclusion of Sunday's regular-season finale.
*
Tiona Hill is a career .323 hitter at UWF and leads the team with 9 home runs over the last two years. She was an All-Gulf South Conference Tournament team selection last year and had game-winning hits in the postseason against Shorter, Valdosta State and Lee in 2017.
*
Sarah Maloney has a 2.66 career ERA at UWF and has struck out nearly a batter per inning in her career. This year, Sarah has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the conference, ranking in the top 10 in the GSC in strikeouts, ERA, and opponent batting average.
*
Meghan Toney is a two-time All-Gulf South Conference and two-time All-South Region selection. She leads all active UWF players in hits, runs scored, and stolen bases, and she is a career .340 hitter.
Facing Valdosta State
* VSU enters the weekend at 22-7 in the GSC, good for second in the league, with a 38-9 overall record.
* Valdosta State ranks ninth in the league in team batting average (.292) but actually leads the conference in home runs (56) and is second in extra-base hits (73 doubles, 13 triples, 56 home runs). The Lady Blazers also rank second in the GSC in ERA (2.63), behind the efforts of Kasie Johnson and Kathryn Carter in the circle.
* Shortstop Jessica Mohl has been one of the best players in the country this year, leading the GSC in batting (.473), slugging (.863), runs (54), hits (69), and doubles (19).
In the GSC Tournament
* West Florida locked up a bid to the Gulf South Conference Tournament last weekend, and the team will make an appearance in the tournament for the 22nd time in program history. All of those appearances have come since 1995.
* UWF has the fourth-most GSC Tournament wins in conference history (43) and the third-best winning percentage (.606) in league history, with three titles.
* The Argonauts have gone 4-3 over the last two GSC Tournaments, batting .324 as a team in those seven games.
Rachel Wright has been UWF's offensive leader across those two tournaments with a .458 (11-24) batting average, three home runs, and five RBIs.
Tiona Hill earned All-GSC Tournament honors last year with a 3-7 performance with 2 doubles.
* The Tournament begins on Thursday, May 3 at North Alabama. Seeding will be decided with this week's slate of games, and UWF currently stands sixth.
When We Saw Valdosta State Last
* The last time UWF and Valdosta State matched up generated as much excitement as anyone could hope for. That matchup came in the South Region final on May 13 at the UWF Softball Complex, and West Florida took a walk-off 7-6 win to move on to the first Super Regional in program history.
*
Tiona Hill was responsible for the walk-off single up the middle, bringing in
Jacey Castro and
Meghan Toney.
* West Florida led for much of the game, holding a 5-2 lead into the fifth, when VSU evened the score with a three-run fifth. The Lady Blazers took the lead with a run in the seventh before Hill's single ended it in the bottom half of the inning.
Jibrasha at the Plate
* The month of April has belonged to sophomore right fielder
Jibrasha Moore, who is leading UWF in batting (.389), hits (14), and stolen bases (10). She is riding a five-game hit streak dating back to the series opener at Montevallo, and she is batting an even .500 (9-18) with six steals and a pair of three-hit games in that time.
* Moore is second on the team with 11 multi-hit games this year, and she has come through in the clutch as often as anyone. The Pensacola native is hitting .400 with runners on, .343 with runners in scoring position, and .368 with two outs. Her 22 hits with runners on base are the most on the team.
Milestone Watch
* Several UWF student-athletes are nearing milestones on the softball field, and many could be reached by the end of the season.
*
Tiona Hill is sitting on 92 career hits and 9 home runs, and
Kathleen Smiley's next RBI will be her 100th.
Meghan Toney has 213 career hits -- the most among active UWF players -- and that puts her just outside the top 10 in UWF history in career hits.
Rachel Wright is two runs scored away from 100 in her career, and she also has 9 career round-trippers.
Sarah Maloney has 29 career wins, 297 career innings pitched and 270 career strikeouts.
Home Sweet Home
* The Argos will be back at the UWF Softball Complex after a week on the road, holding a 9-4 record at home this year.
* West Florida is hitting .325 at the friendly confines through 13 games, averaging more than six runs per game and slugging .506.
*
Callan Taylor has led UWF hits (15), RBIs (15), slugging (.750) and total bases (27), while
Kathleen Smiley leads UWF with 5 doubles, a .561 on-base percentage and 11 walks.
*
Sarah Maloney and
Grace Gilbert have combined for a 6-2 record and a 2.53 ERA over 52.2 total innings at home, holding opponents to a .232 batting average.
* UWF has a .780 (46-13) winning percentage at home since 2016.
