Newcomers Lead UWF to Top 10 Win

Freshman Peyton Peffers & Graduate Transfer Sam Waarum each scored in Argonaut Debut

Columbus, Ga. – #10 Ranked UWF started the year off by shutting out #2 Ranked Carson-Newman with a final score of 2-0 at Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus, Georgia, Friday night. The win marked the 11th-consecutive season that UWF has won its first game of the year.

The first half was a back and forth defensive affair that featured both teams trying to figure out their opponent. This seemed to favor the Argonauts as they found some weaknesses in the Eagles and used that to their advantage in the second half. UWF had 5 total shots and Carson-Newman had 3 total shots in the first half. The best shot for the Argonauts in the first half came 26 minutes in, when Jessica Quixley had an impressive turnaround shot right at the top of the box that nearly missed over the goal.

The second half was all Argos as they turned up the aggressiveness on the attack and forced some early issues for Carson-Newman. Freshman Peyton Peffers was all over the field it seemed like today as she was creating havoc left and right for the Eagles. Her hard work paid off in the 47th minute for the Argos as she scored the first goal of the season for them. After it looked like the Eagles' goalkeeper had held on to the ball for a diving save, Peffers came in and knocked the ball loose and into the goal for the score. Grace Busby was credited with the assist on the play. The second goal for the Argonauts came off the foot of Sam Waarum as she kicked a laser into the back of the net in the 81st minute to put the final touches on a UWF opening victory.

West Florida was dominant in all facets of the game on Friday, outshooting the Eagles 13-8 and keeping possession enough to gain 7 corner kicks on the day. Esthefanny Barreras had 3 saves and with the help of her defense picked up her first shutout of the season.

The victory helped the Argos complete an opening weekend sweep of Carson-Newman in both football and women's soccer, as the UWF football team defeated the Eagles 19-9 Thursday night.
