Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. – The 13th-ranked University of West Florida volleyball team split another day of elite competition at the Colorado Premiere Challenge in Denver, Colorado, on Friday afternoon. In a pair of five-set matches, UWF fell 2-3 to No. 3 Lewis before grabbing a big come-from-behind win over No. 14 Central Missouri.
UWF is now 3-3 on the year with the split, and all six matches West Florida has played this year have been against ranked teams. The Argonauts' last eight matches have been against ranked opponents, dating back to December 1 last year against No. 9 Palm Beach Atlantic in the Regional Semifinal.
Nadine Williams picked up two double-doubles on the day, going for 14 kills and 13 digs in Game 1 before picking up another 15 kills and 14 digs against UCM.
Logan Kael had 40 digs between the two matches to lead all players, while Williams' 29 kills were a team high. Like last week,
Brogan Wallin and
Taylor Vaneekeren provided two strong setting options for the UWF attack, with 53 and 47 assists on the day, respectively.
GAME 1: UWF 2, LEWIS 3
The Argonauts fell in a third consecutive five-set match against a ranked opponent, despite recording more points (80 to 74) and kills (64 to 55) than the Flyers.
Makila York tallied 19 kills for UWF against Lewis, marking her third match with double-digit kills, and she hit .441.
While York was the star of the match, she was far from the only Argo to shine in the tournament-opener.
Jordyn Poppen and
Nadine Williams each had 14 kills, and Williams ranked second on the team with 13 digs in the match, as well.
Mackenzie Chrisman's eight kills were the next-highest total among Argonauts, and her six total blocks led all players.
West Florida got off to an unreal start in the first set, hitting .406 with just two errors while holding LU to an .083 attack percentage. After going back-and-forth on the way to a Lewis win in the second set, UWF picked it back up and hit .290 in the third to take a 25-22 win and get out to a 2-1 lead.
Lewis would ultimately win the fourth 25-22 and would not be stopped in the deciding set, hitting .438 the fifth and taking a 15-11 win.
GAME 2: UWF 3, CENTRAL MISSOURI 2
After a slow start in the first set and dropping the second, West Florida stormed back in final three sets to finish off a come-from-behind win, capping it off with a dominant fifth frame.
Sadie Hough was outstanding in her first collegiate match, with 14 kills and a .370 hitting percentage to go along with 5 total blocks. The freshman from Cleburne, Texas, proved to be the engine for the West Florida attack, tallying just two combined kills in the first two sets and 12 in the final three, all of which were wins for UWF. She joins fellow freshman
JoDee Kovanda as Argonauts with double-digit kills in their debut this year.
West Florida out-hit UCM in each of the last three sets, taking 25-21, 25-18, and 15-10 wins on the way to the team's third win of the year.
Nadine Williams led the team with 15 kills, and
Jordyn Poppen added 13.
West Florida will continue its run at the Colorado Premiere on Saturday with times and opponents to be determined at the conclusion of Friday matches beginning at 7 pm MT.
