BOX SCORE
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team made it two in a row at home with a 4-1 victory over the Union Bulldogs Friday at the UWF Soccer Complex. The match was the second straight with four goals for the West Florida offense, which will look to continue its momentum Sunday vs. Christian Brothers. The win was the team's first in conference play in 2018.
After a 90 minute weather delay caused by heavy rain and lightning, the Argos (2-2-1, 1-0 GSC) assumed an early lead in the match, scoring twice in the game's first 12 minutes. Jerry Wiltshire opened the scoring with a header off a Barrett Mills corner in the game's seventh minute to make it 1-0. Wiltshire and Mills each picked up an assist five minutes later on a Sean Hoffstatter goal, once again started on a corner, to make it 2-0.
UWF outshot Union (0-3-1, 0-1 GSC) 5-3 in the opening period. The Argos would follow that by outshooting the Bulldogs 13-9 in the closing half. UWF put 11 shots on goal vs. six for Union.
A goal from Ibrahim Nasr in the contest's 71st minute drew Union within 2-1, but a late surge by the UWF offense extinguished any hope of a comeback. Sergio Otalora netted his first goal of the season on a gorgeous finish from the top of the box in the 74th minute before an 80th minute penalty kick goal by Rafael Godoi sealed the victory.
Keeper Jacob Murray notched five saves as he recorded his first victory in net this year. The match marked the third time in five games this season that the UWF defense has limited an opponent to one goal or shut them out. The contest marked the first time since 2016 that the Argos have scored at least four goals in back-to-back games.
UWF returns to action vs. Christian Brothers (0-3-0) Sunday at 12:30 at the UWF Soccer Complex. A live stream of the match will be available at goargos.com/live.
