Argos Put on a Show in Home Opener

UWF Dominates all Facets of the Game on Friday

Pensacola, Fla. – UWF started off conference play this season with a dominating 8-1 performance against Union University on Friday night at the UWF Soccer Complex. The fans finally got a chance to witness their #4 ranked West Florida Argonauts in action, and the Argos gave them a show they'll never forget. This game was all Argos from the beginning.

FIRST HALF: Deneisha Blackwood got the Argonauts on the board first with a goal in the opening minutes of the match, thanks to a great assist by Kayla Douglas. It didn't take long for the Argos to strike again, as Grace Busby picked up her fourth goal of the season less than thirty seconds later with a shot inside the box. Elizabeth Vickers tacked on her second goal of the season in the 27th minute, after Victoria Swift split two defenders and made a perfect pass to her for an open shot. The Argonauts weren't done yet though, as Jessica Quixley put the Argos up four right before the half ended. This was the biggest halftime lead of the year for UWF. UWF had taken 24 total shots, whereas Union had zero the entire half.

SECOND HALF: The Argos attack didn't let up in the second half. In the 48th minute the Argonauts were all over the box and ended up forcing a Bulldogs' own goal to make the score 5-0 in favor of UWF. Less than four minutes later the Bulldogs ended the shutout on just their second shot of the game. Grace Busby tallied on her second goal of the game with a PK shot in the 51st minute. Senior Graduate Sam Waarum got her name on the board in the 60th minute with a strike from the top of the box into the corner of the net. Freshman Lee Ducharme ended the night's scoring with a perfect spin move on a Bulldogs' defender and followed it with a floater over the goal keeper for the final goal.

OVERALL STATS: West Florida outshot Union 32-2. The Argonauts destroyed Union in corner kicks taken as they had fifteen corners compared to the Bulldogs who only had two.

NEXT UP: UWF wraps up the homestead with a matchup against Christian Brothers University on Sunday at 3pm CT. Christian Brothers is (2-1-1) coming off a 5-0 win against Spring Hill College on Friday afternoon.
