Argonauts Win in Overtime Thriller

Grace Busby hits Game Winning Header to Secure the Win

Pensacola, Fla. – West Florida finished their home stand in fashion with a game winning goal in overtime from the head of Grace Busby. The final score from the overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon was 2-1. The third consecutive weekend sweep helped the Argos improve to a 6-0 overall record and a 2-0 record in conference play. The Argonauts' defense has been outstanding this year recording three shutouts and allowing only 1 goal all season.

FIRST HALF: After a two hour lightening delay both teams finally took the field to battle it out in a classic Gulf South Conference matchup. Jordan Lewis gave the Argos the early lead in this one, after she nailed the back of the net with a shot from inside the box in the fifth minute. Christian Brothers would answer right back though. Lady Bucs' Sinead Tierney headed one in, thanks to an impressive cross from her teammate Bailey Tadlock. This would be the only scoring of the first half, making the score 1-1 at the intermission.

SECOND HALF & OT: Neither team was able to put one in the net in the second half of the match, despite both teams getting multiple opportunities. Overtime was a different story however. In the 97th minute of the match Deneisha Blackwood snuck a perfect cross just past a Buccaneer defender to an open Grace Busby, who headed it in for the game winning goal to seal the victory for the Argos.

OVERALL STATS: The Argos outshot the Buccaneers 23-11. The Argonauts tied the Lady Bucs in corner kicks at 7, tying their lowest amount all season. The Argos' defense has yet to allow more than one goal all season.

NEXT UP: UWF will head back on the road to the Peach State next weekend to take on Gulf South Conference opponents West Georgia and Valdosta State. They will face the 2-2-2, (2-0) West Georgia Wolves on Friday night at 4pm ET at the University Soccer Field, located in Carrolton, Georgia. The Wolves are coming off a weekend sweep of their own against GSC opponents, Montevallo and Auburn Montgomery. The Argos will wrap up the weekend with the 4-2, (2-0) Valdosta State Blazers at the VSU Soccer Complex on Sunday at 1pm ET. The Blazer are also coming off a weekend sweep against GSC conference opponents, Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo.
