LIVINGSTON, ALA.- No.10 UWF (10-4, 2-1 GSC) defeated UWA (8-4, 2-1 GSC) in a four set match (23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22). The Argos dropped the first set after an attempted comeback, but prevailed in the next three sets for the win.
The Argos came out in set one going toe to toe with the Tigers up until UWA went on two separate four point runs, giving them a lead of 23-15. With only two points to go give, the Argos went on a 8-1 run at the end that just wasn't enough. The Argos dug too deep of a hole to come out of making the final score 25-23.
Set two was the Argos to win from the start. UWF built up a big lead 13-9 early on and then only allowed UWA 10 more points in the set making the final score 25-19. As a team, UWF hit a .429, had three block and two service aces.
UWF repeated the second set and won 25-19. Argos stayed fighting throughout the whole set winning long rallies and maintaining the momentum. Logan Kael went of a serving run to give the Argos the lead they needed in the beginning to get them in their groove. Our net play was what sealed the deal with 7 blocks and as a team hit a .333.
The fourth set was another close set for the Argos where at anyone time did either team lead by more then three points at a time. UWF rallied back-and-forth with continuous side outs until the last three points. UWA led 22-21, when Caleigh Morrison got a kill to tie the match 22 all and from there, Logan Kael went back to serve the last three points. Nadine Williams had the first kill and Mackenzie Chrisman had the last two kills for the win 25-22 and a 3-1 match score.
Jordyn Poppen and Nadine Williams led in the kill department for the Argos both with 13. Mackenzie Chrisman led hitting a .714 with 11 kills on 14 attempts and one error followed by Poppen hitting a .464 with 13 kills on 28 attempts and no errors. The Argos had a total of 15 blocks with Caleigh Morrison leading the way with six assisted and one solo block followed by Chrisman with five assisted and one solo block. Defensively, UWF had a total of 49 digs with Logan Kael having 18 of the 49 and Taylor Vaneekeren having 10.
The Argos will be returning home this Friday, Sept. 21st at 6:00pm to host West Georgia back in the UWF Field House. UWF volleyball will be hosting their next six conference matches before going back on the road.
