Valdosta, Ga. – UWF defeated Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 3-0. All three goals came in the second half for the Argonauts. The 3-0 victory extended their winning streak to 8 games, and gave them their fourth shutout of the season. West Florida is now (4-0-1) at the VSU Soccer Complex and (7-1-3) all-time against the Blazers.
FIRST HALF: West Florida dominated the time of possession in the first half, but were unable to strike the back of the net. They had 8 total shots, whereas Valdosta State was held to just one shot. The game was scoreless at the half.
SECOND HALF: Jessica Quixley scored the first goal of the game in the 59
th minute, with a header that was off of a corner kick from
Sam Waarum. Waarum and Quixley weren't done yet though, as they combined for another goal less than two minutes later. Waarum crossed one to
Grace Busby, who then passed it to an open Quixley. Quixley struck the back of the net to put the Argonauts up 2-0. Freshman
Lee Ducharme picked up her third goal of the season in the 66
th minute thanks to a beautiful assist by
Isabella Garcia-Salas. All of the goals were scored within seven minutes of each other.
OVERALL STATS: The Argos outshot the Blazers 19-6. West Florida had nine corner kicks in the match, and Valdosta State only had one. Sophomore
Jessica Quixley now has five goals this season, and Senior
Sam Waarum has five assists this year. The Argos' defense shutout both West Georgia and Valdosta State this weekend.
NEXT UP: UWF will visit the state of Alabama next weekend to take on Gulf South Conference opponents Auburn-Montgomery and Montevallo. They will face the 1-5, (1-3) Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks on Friday night at 4:30pm CT at the AUM Soccer Complex, located in Montgomery, Alabama. The Warhawks won their first game of the season in their previous game against GSC opponent, Shorter University, last Sunday. The Argos will wrap up their road trip with the 3-3-2, (2-2) Montevallo Falcons at the Georgine Lemak Soccer Field on Sunday at 1pm CT. The Falcons are coming off an overtime upset win against #19 ranked Lee University.
