MONTGOMERY, Ala. – UWF men's soccer made it five straight victories with a 3-1 win at Auburn Montgomery Friday evening. Andrew Wentz and Sean Hoffstatter notched a pair of first half goals, and Gavin Gillies found the back of the net for some late insurance deep in the second half to help UWF stay perfect in conference play.
Wentz opened the scoring early, notching his second goal of the season exactly fifteen minutes into the match off a feed from Hoffstatter. A flurry of action soon followed with Sverrir Smarason converting a penalty for AUM (2-7-0, 1-2-0 GSC) less than three minutes later to equalize the score at 1-1. Hoffstatter responded in kind though, scoring for the second time in less than four minutes to give UWF a lead it would not relinquish. Wentz picked up the assist.
A goal in the game's 78th minute by Gillies off a feed from Rafael Godoi helped UWF seal up the win. The Argos outshot the Warhawks 22-8 and outpaced the home team 8-4 in shots on goal. Jihad Gomes picked up the win in net, notching three saves. The two teams combined for 18 fouls and eight cards in the hotly-contested match.
The five-match win streak is the longest for the Argo program since 2015, when the team won five straight to open the season. The win improved UWF to 3-0 vs. AUM since 2016.
The Argos (5-2-1, 3-0-0 GSC) will next head to Montevallo (2-6-0, 1-2-0 GSC) Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
