UWF Drops Road Game To Delta State, 63-52

The Argonauts were just 4-of-18 from outside and committed 22 turnovers


CLEVELAND, Miss.– The UWF women's basketball team was unable to get its offense going in the second half and fell to Delta State, 63-52, at Walter Sillers Coliseum Thursday night.
 
UWF (10-4, 4-3 Gulf South) shot 41 percent overall but was just 4-of-18 from outside, including a 1-of-8 effort in the second half. The Argos committed 22 turnovers compared to just 13 for the Lady Statesmen. DSU scored 16 points off those UWF miscues.
 
Toni Brewer had 16 points and eight rebounds for UWF, who saw its 7-game winning streak against DSU end. That was the longest streak of any school against the stories DSU program. Anna Hall and Halee Nieman each finished with 10 points.
 
Delta State (10-4, 5-2) outscored UWF 23-11 over the final 11 minutes. Quantesha Patterson led three players in double figures with 16 points – scoring 14 in the second half. Nia Johnson made three second-half 3-pointers to finish with 13.
 
After falling behind 4-2 to begin the game, UWF went on an 8-0 run for a 10-4 lead. They Argos extended the margin to 17-10 on a second-chance layup from Hall late in the first quarter. The Lady Statesmen stayed within striking distance and closed the half on an 8-0 run of their own to trim the Argo edge to 27-26 at the half.
 
UWF led 41-40 with 2:58 in the third following a Danielle Norquest 3-pointer. But DSU answered with a pair of long jumpers in the final minute to grab a 45-41 lead going into the final period.
 
Patterson scored the first five points of the fourth to stretch the margin to 50-41 one minute into the fourth. The Argos cut it to seven twice but never were able to get any closer.
 
UWF will return to play on Saturday against Mississippi College (5-7, 1-5) in Clinton, Miss. The game begins at 2 p.m. in A. E. Wood Coliseum.
