Well-Balanced Attack Propels Argos Past Mississippi College

Four score in double figures as the Argos pick up GSC win

CLINTON, Miss. –  Four players scored in double figures and six players scored at least eight points as UWF men's basketball defeated Mississippi College 72-59 at the A.E. Wood Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

"All road wins in the GSC are special," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "We played our most complete game of the year on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Our effort was good throughout the game."

The Argos started the game on an 11-0 run and enjoyed a 13-0 run later in the first half. The early scoring was sparked by Bryan Chalifoux, who netted 3-of-4 first half three attempts.

Jon Brown scored eight points and recorded seven rebounds in the first. He also passed out three assists. Rashaan Benson scored eight points and registered three assists in the first as well.

UWF kept up the hot shooting from beyond the arc in the second, knocking down 4-of-8 (.500) threes. The team finished the game 10-of-18 (.556) beyond the arc. The ten three-pointers matched a season-high.

Benson led the way with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 shooting from deep. Brown finished with 14 points plus a collegiate career-best seven assists. He notched the double-double with 15 rebounds, a career-high. The double-double was his second of the season.

Maxwell Benoit added 13 points. Jarrett Henderson posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was the fourth of the season for the senior. Chalifoux finished with nine points while Henri Ventoniemi added eight.

"We had a bunch of guys play well and had various guys make big plays whether it was a basket, getting a big rebound, or taking a charge. Proud of our effort," said Burkhamer.

The Choctaws (4-7, 1-5 GSC) were led by Marcus Lytle, who posted a game-high 20 points. The Argos limited the home team to just 23-of-66 (.348) shooting from the field.

UWF (5-11, 1-7 GSC) will return to action at home Thursday vs. Shorter (2-12,0-6 GSC). The team closes the month of January with four of five games at the UWF Field House. Tip vs. the Hawks is slated for 7:30 p.m.
