PENSACOLA, Fla.– UWF had three players score in double figures and held Shorter to its third-lowest shooting game of the season in a 68-44 win at the UWF Field House Thursday night.
Toni Brewer had 16 points and 11 rebounds for her 12th double-double, while
Halee Nieman had 14 and
Fanny Hulmi added 10 for UWF (12-4, 6-3 Gulf South).
UWF shot 43 percent and outrebounded Shorter 51-30. The Argos had 14 points from 18 offensive rebounds.
Shorter got out to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter before UWF came back on the strength of an 11-2 run for a 14-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes. From there it was all UWF as the Blue and White outscored the Hawks 21-9 for a 35-19 halftime advantage.
The defense was on full display by limiting Shorter to just two field goals in the second quarter and two in the third. The Hawks made just 4-of-33 from the floor for 12 percent in the middle 25:09 minutes of play.
All 12 players who dressed saw playing time with 10 of them scoring.
Shorter (1-14, 0-8) dropped its 11th-consecutive game and was led in scoring by Jasmine Gaines with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
UWF will return to play on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to West Georgia (10-4, 5-3) at 2 p.m. The game will be preceded by a Free Youth Clinic for children in eighth grade and below as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration. The clinic will feature representatives from UWF's women's athletics teams and begin at Noon on Pen Air Field.
