Brewer Gets Another Double-Double as UWF Holds On For Win Over West Georgia

Toni Brewer posted her 13th double-double of the year

PENSACOLA, Fla.Toni Brewer scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead UWF past West Georgia, 65-62, at the UWF Field House Saturday.

Brewer fought through some second-half foul trouble to post her 13th double-double of the season.

UWF (13-4, 7-3 Gulf South) shot 37 percent in an up-and-down night and held a 52-33 rebounding edge. One of the big advantages came at the free throw line where the Argos were 15-of-21 compared to 7-of-13 for the Wolves.

"I was super impressed with our team today and how they were able to hang on and finish the game," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said.

Belle Bistrow made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, while Halee Nieman added 13 points – eight from the charity stripe – and nine boards. Anna Hall again flirted with a triple double before ending the night with seven points, seven assists and a game-high 13 rebounds.

UWG (10-5, 6-4) was led on offense by Aysha Harris' 14 points. A'Kia Harris had 10 points and nine rebounds.

With the game tied at five early in the contest, back-to-back 3-pointers by Belle Bistrow sparked a 9-2 UWF run as the Argos claimed a 14-7 lead. The momentum didn't last for long as the Wolves fought back and trimmed the margin to 14-13 by the end of the quarter.

The second quarter saw more back-and-forth action. UWF led 24-17 before UWG tied it at 24 and again at 26. Layups from Toni Brewer and Fanny Hulmi gave the home squad a 4-point edge before they secured a 33-28 at the half.

Bistrow had three 3-pointers for 11 points and Brewer posted 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Argonauts ratcheted up their defensive effort early in the third, holding the Wolves to 1-of-11 to open the third quarter. That allowed UWF to extend the lead to 40-30 on the strength of a 7-2 run.

UWF didn't go away, getting to within five points twice before cutting it to one in the final minute of the period. Brewer made it a 46-43 Argo lead with a buzzer-beater on an Anna Hall assist.

The lead reached double figures with just over four minutes to play when Nieman made a pair of free throws for a 58-47 lead.

UWG made two 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds to trim the UWF lead to 64-62. Nieman made 1-of-2 free throws with 8.3 remaining before Jessica Brown's 3 at the buzzer was off the mark.

UWF returns to action on Thursday with a road contest at West Alabama (7-10, 4-6). Tip-off at Pruitt Hall is set for 5:30 p.m.
