PENSACOLA, Fla.–
Fanny Hulmi made all six of her 3-point shots and finished with a career-high 20 points to help UWF to an 85-79, come-from-behind win over Montevallo at the UWF Field House Saturday.
UWF used a 16-0 run early in the second quarter to turn a 9-point deficit into a 32-25 lead. The Argos led 37-33 at the half and extended their margin to 13 with a 11-2 run in the opening 4:19 of the third quarter.
The lead stayed between 8-15 points for much of the remainder of the game before the Falcons closed to within six in the final 20 seconds.
"I loved our effort today and I thought we played hard," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We made some small tweaks in the second quarter that led to the comeback and once things evened out, we found our groove (at both ends of the floor)"
Hulmi busted out of a tough shooting stretch, finishing with a game-high scoring total. It was her first double-figure performance since the season-opener against Albany State. Her six triples were tied for the ninth-most in a game in program history and are tied for the most in the GSC this year.
"That's what we've been waiting for," Yelton said. "We've got our four seniors leading us and (our staff) has been wondering how can we get her rolling. We were excited to see her come alive and hit some shots and play with confidence. This is the time of the year where it clicks for those freshmen."
A game after struggling to a season-low percentage at Valdosta State, UWF (10-3, 4-2 Gulf South) connected on 52 percent and made nine 3-pointers. The work on the glass also rebounded from 48 hours prior, securing a 40-to-30 edge on the glass Saturday.
Senior
Toni Brewer had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while classmates
Halee Nieman and
Belle Bistrow went for 16 and 15, respectively. Senior
Anna Hall dished out 10 assists and pulled down a game-high 13 boards, but narrowly missed a third triple-double of the season, scoring nine points.
Montevallo (8-5, 4-2) shot 46 percent and was led by Nautika Philpot's 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
UWF will return to action next week with a road swing through the GSC's Mississippi schools, beginning Thursday at Delta State (9-3, 4-1). Tip-off at Sillers Coliseum is at 5:30 p.m.
