PENSACOLA, Fla.– UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton challenged her team to come out with more energy than it had in recent weeks. Her team answered the call in a big way Thursday.
After falling behind to West Alabama 2-0, UWF scored the next 28 points for a 28-2 lead early in the second quarter. The lead stayed in the mid-20-point range the remainder of the half before it ballooned to 30-points in the second half.
Senior
Belle Bistrow led the Argonauts with five 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 17 points.
Toni Brewer had 16 points and eight rebounds on 5-of-9 shooting and 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
Halee Nieman and
Fanny Hulmi each scored 10 points to give the team four players in double figures.
UWF (16-4, 10-3 Gulf South) shot 46 percent and made 10 3-pointers while outrebounding the Tigers 51-25. The Argonauts were especially efficient in the third quarter, making 62 percent and 4-of-6 from outside while outscoring the Tigers 22-10.
After making its first shot of the game, West Alabama (8-12, 5-8) had one of those games that coaches lose sleep over, missing its next 11 shots and two free throws. The Tigers were held to their third-lowest shooting performance of the season, at just 32.7 percent. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett had 13 points and five rebounds to pace the squad in both categories.
The Argos have won six-consecutive games for the first time in two seasons, with the average margin of victory in those contests at 20.5 points.
UWF will now hit the road for three games next week, beginning Monday night against Auburn-Montgomery at 5:30 p.m.
