Cleveland, Tenn.- After a tightly contested first half, the 14th ranked UWF Men's Soccer team was able to score two second half goals to pull away from Lee by a final score of 2-0 on Friday night inside the Lee Soccer Complex.
West Florida (8-1-0, 3-1-0) was actually outshot on the night by the Flames by a total of 9-6 but were able to get as many chances as their opponent by collecting an even amount of corner kicks with both teams having two.
In the first half, the backline of
Lucas Barankiewicz,
Brandon Jose and
Hakeem Reid, filling in for the injured
Jerry Wiltshire, was able to clamp down the Flames while the Argos offense got rolling. Goalkeeper
Jihad Gomes was big as well with two key saves in the opening period. It was a good test for Gomes, the Brazilian goalkeeper who missed the second half of the Argos 1-0 loss against AUM on Sunday with an injury.
The second half would see UWF open the game up and finally get on the board when
Sean Hoffstatter and
Ryan Sandidge were able to sneak the ball in the box to find
Bernardo Torres in the 57th minute for his second goal on the year. It would be just two minutes later that
Ed Chappe would continue his strong play on the season to collect his third goal for the year and give the Argos a commanding lead in the match.
From there on, a collective team defensive effort led by midfielders
Davi Alves, Sandidge and senior
Rafael Godoi, was enough to rattle to Lee and lift West Florida to a 2-0 victory.
Next Up: The Argos will wrap up their quick road trip with a Sunday afternoon match at Shorter. Kickoff against the Hawks is set for 12:30 pm.
