Pensacola, Fla.- On a night where four different Argos found the back of net and the UWF clamped down on the opponent once again. the sixth ranked West Florida Argonauts easily cruised by Gulf South Conference foe Montevallo by a final score of 5-1 inside the UWF Soccer Complex.
Using a well-balanced attack, the Argos (7-0-0) were able to spend the majority of time in Falcon territory which led to many scoring chances as UWF outshot Montevallo 21-11 and had seven corner kicks to the Falcons four.
Early on in the first half, West Florida was not rewarded as chances by redshirt-senior
Sean Hoffstatter, forward
Gabriel Arraes and British midfielder
Ed Chappe were constantly turned away by goalkeeper Robert Kuta which in turn allowed the visitors to test Argo goalkeeper
Jihad Gomes, but the sophomore from Brazil was up to the challenge and able to keep the score knotted up at zero.
It was not until the 35th minute when the Argonauts would finally get on the board as redshirt-junior
Teavon Spencer was able to head one home off a corner from Chappe. UWF would quickly make it 2-0 ten minutes later when the do everything defender,
Jerry Wiltshire also used his head to find the back of the net off a pass from
Marko Tomic to with 10 seconds remaining in the first half.
In the second half, the Falcons responded early in the period on a goal from Mario Gratzl to cut the Argo lead in half 2-1. However, the home team would respond with three unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes to put the game out of reach with junior forward
Yuri Parisotto scoring two goals in the 57th and 67th minute respectively, off beautiful feeds by Spencer and senior midfielder
Rafael Godoi. Junior defender
Hakeem Reid would close out the scoring with his goal in the 88th minute off assists by
Teague Coleman and
Tulio Canineu. Reid, a senior from Jacksonville, was inserted into the game just ten minutes prior for fellow defender Wiltshire who got some well-deserved rest after playing every minute for the Argos this season.
On the defensive side, the backline for the Argonauts was stout once again with the trio of
Brandon Jose,
Lucas Barankiewicz and Wiltshire starting together with senior midfielders
Andrew Wentz and
Rafael Godoi in support. Gomes made his seventh start of the season in net with six saves on the night.
