Pensacola, Fla.-Despite outshooting their opponent by a total of 17-8, the number six ranked UWF men's soccer team dropped a home match to GSC foe, Auburn Montgomery, by a final of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon inside the UWF Soccer Complex.
West Florida (7-1-0), was led by senior forward
Sean Hoffstatter, junior midfielder
Ed Chappe and defender
Lucas Barankiewicz who each had three shots, while goalies
Jihad Gomes and
Sergi Quintana had a combined three saves in another solid defensive effort.
In the first half, the Argos just could not quite finish despite numerous good chances by Chappe and do-everything defender
Jerry Wiltshire. Wiltshire, the native from London, England, later left in the second half of the match after taking a soccer ball to the head. UWF would get a few more chances in the 36th and 38th minutes respectively, from
Davi Alves and Barankiewicz but ended up going to the halftime break with the score still tied at zero.
The second half would see Auburn Montgomery take the lead at 1-0 on a goal from Tate Dean in the 65th minute on West Florida goalkeeper, Quintana, who replaced Gomes to start the second half because of an injury. The Argonauts would get plenty of good looks at the net from Hofstatter, Chappe, Barankiewicz and redshirt junior
Teavon Spencer, but unfortunately it just was not enough to upend the Warhawks.
Up Next: The Argonauts will get a few days off before they hit the road to Tennessee to face Lee on Friday afternoon. Kickoff against against the Flames is set for 3pm.
