Union Volleyball
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Argos continues their GSC undefeated streak this season in a competitive match against Union. UWF came out on top in a four set match against UU tonight as the Bulldogs won the first set. Tomorrow the Argos will play the Bucs at the UWF Field House at 1:00 PM.
With their win tonight in decisions of 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19, UWF has improved their record to 18-8 overall and 10-0 in the GSC. The Bulldogs have moved to 15-10 overall and 7-3 in the GSC. Also with tonight's win, West Florida is the first team to clinch a spot in the 2019 GSC Volleyball Championship.
UWF came out tonight and dropped the first set, but then came back and won the next three sets for the win. Senior Jordyn Poppen was an offensive powerhouse tonight talling 25 kills on 50 attacks and only six errors hitting .380. She was followed by Ebony Powers with 15 kills. Sophomore Taylor Vaneekeren racked up the assists tonight with 49 assists and 11 digs for a double-double.
Jodee Kovanda and Phoebe Hozeska each had three blocks on the night which kept pressure on UU's hitters on the other side of the net. As a team, the Argos had 91 digs and 71 kills on the night.
Tomorrow's match is against Christian Brothers who comes into the match 6-20 overall and 3-7 in the GSC after a loss tonight against Auburn Montgomery 0-3. Overall against the Bucs, the Argos are 17-2, and 9-0 at home. UWF's last loss to Christian Brothers was in 2012 in Tampa in the NCAA South Regional Quarterfinals where CBU won 3-1. Last year the Argos traveled to Memphis to play them and won in three sets. CBU and UWF's match will begin at 1:00 PM at the UWF Field House.
