Pensacola, Fla.- Behind goals from
Ed Chappe and
Hakeem Reid, the UWF Men's Soccer was able to get past Alabama Huntsville by a final of 2-0 in the GSC Tournament Semifinals on Friday afternoon at Ashton Brosnaham Park.
The win moves the Argonauts to 13-1-3 and advances them to Sunday's GSC final against Lee. Lee won earlier in the afternoon 2-1 defeated the number one seed, Mississippi College.
For the Argos, the game started out wonderfully as GSC Freshman of the Year,
Davi Alves, found Chappe at the top of box in the seventh minute to put the blue and white on the board first.
The rest of the first half was relatively quiet for both teams as the half ended with each team having three shots. West Florida outshot the Flames by a total of 9-8 on the afternoon.
The second half was much of the same until the 82nd minute when substitute
Hakeem Reid was able to sneak past the defense and converted a beautiful pass from fellow senior Andy Wentz to make it 2-0 and put the game on ice.
The Argonaut defense was strong as well, only allowing four shots on goal as midfielders
Ryan Sandidge, Wentz, Eduardo Quieroz and defenders
Jerry Wiltshire,
Brandon Jose and
Lucas Barankiewicz controlled the game from the back end.
Next Up: The Argos will compete for the GSC Championship on Sunday afternoon when they face Lee University. Kickoff between the Argonauts and Flames is set for 12pm from Ashton Brosnaham Park.
