PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team swept West Georgia on Tuesday, improving to 20-8 overall and 12-0 in the Gulf South Conference. With the win, UWF maintained its lead over Alabama Huntsville in the conference standings with four matches remaining in the regular season.
"I think this was a combination of a great serving match and a great defensive match for us," head coach
Melissa Wolter said. "That is a really good team that struggled tonight because of those two things we were doing. I'm really proud of our players – I thought we executed our gameplan really well and caused problems on that side of the net."
The night was never in doubt for the Argonauts, who held West Georgia to a .000 hitting percentage. That matches UWF's season-best opponent attack percentage, along with the October 5 match against Valdosta State. UWF posted eight total blocks, with
Phoebe Hozeska's five leading the way.
UWF held UWG to a negative attack percentage in the first and second sets, taking 25-14 and 25-8 victories. The teams were tied 7-7 before UWF went on a five-point run to go ahead for the first time in the set. The Argonauts then wrapped up the set with a nine-point run.
West Florida never left any question in the second set, jumping ahead 19-4 aided by an eight-point run in the middle of the set. Again in the third, there was no trouble for UWF, winning 25-17.
Jordyn Poppen and
Ebony Powers each had 10 kills in the match, while
Veresia Yon tallied 9. Powers also hit .625 and added three blocks.
Ashton Marshall picked up 12 digs, giving her double-digit digs for the 26th time this year.
UWF will visit West Alabama and Mississippi College on Friday and Saturday.
