Argos Drop GSC Contest To #5 Lee, 54-36

UWF held Lee to its second-lowest shooting game of the season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball team shot just 28 percent and fell to No. 5 Lee, 54-36, at the UWF Field House on Sunday.

UWF (3-6, 0-3 Gulf South) was held scoreless for the first 5:30 of the second quarter, allowing Lee to extend its lead to 19-11. The Argonauts battled back to within 19-17 before the Lady Flames went ahead 26-19 at the half.

After Aline Fevrier opened the third quarter with a layup for the home squad, the Lady Flames went on a 12-0 run to take the momentum back and kept the Argos at bay the remainder of the game.

"This was a good measuring stick for our young players and they saw just how hard you have to play when playing a top team in the country," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "They were thrown in to the trenches and showed a lot of heart and determination. This is part of the stepping stone for our team.

The Argos battled foul trouble late in the second quarter and following an injury to Mary Denman Luke, saw some of their regular rotations get pushed into irregular combinations.

Lee (11-0, 3-0) extended its school-record start to the season despite shooting 36 percent from the floor – its second-lowest this year. Haley Schubert led all players with 18 points and three steals. The Lady Flames outrebounded the Argos 42-36.

The Lady Flames' transition game hurt UWF at times, scoring 10 points on fast break opportunities.

Danielle Norquest continued to be a bright spot for UWF, finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds and four steals for her sixth double-double of the year. Fanny Hulmi, Faithe Franklin and Rachel McCree each had six points.

UWF will conclude its four-game homestand on Tuesday evening when it plays host to Alabama Huntsville (4-4, 2-1). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
