Harris Homers, UWF Baseball Stops Skid With Win At SHC

Argos return home Saturday to open GSC play vs. Christian Brothers

MOBILE, Ala. – UWF baseball got back in the win column with a 6-2 victory at Spring Hill Wednesday evening. The Argos scored four of their six runs with two outs. Bryant Harris Jr. hit the first home run of his UWF career.

"Obviously it was good to get on the W side, but we've still got a lot of work to do offensively," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat.

Tony Kucera got the start for the Argos and set aside all six he faced over the first two innings. He gave way to a platoon of Argo relief men beginning with Daniel Floyd in the third. Floyd and Hunter Lucas combined to strand five aboard in the fourth and fifth.

The Argos jumped out to a lead in the top of the third. Isaac Phillips worked his way on with a walk before Dylan Menhennett doubled to the left field corner to make it second and third. UWF cashed in on a throwing error by the Badger infield that plated both runners.

Joey Bend added to the Argo lead with an RBI single to score Matthew Estrada in the top of the fifth. The Badgers pulled back within 3-1 later that frame, but Lucas left the bases full to keep the Argo edge intact.

Harris Jr. went deep with two down in the sixth to expand the advantage to 4-1. The Argos added two more tallies in the seventh courtesy of another Badger error and a Matt Sullivan sacrifice fly.

The Badgers (2-6) outhit the Argos 6-5. The Badgers committed three errors in the game. Joey Bend was the only UWF bat with two hits. Menhennett and Estrada each scored two runs. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for UWF.

John Sklopan and Joseph Guidry each finished with two hits for the Badgers. Taylor Gibson (0-1) suffered the loss for SHC after allowing two unearned runs over 3.2 innings pitched. He struck out four and walked four.

The Argos (2-4) return home Saturday to open conference play vs. Christian Brothers (1-4). First pitch in the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m.

"I think we're still trying to find ourselves a little bit and find that continuity in the lineup," said Jeffcoat. "Obviously getting the W is good, but we've got to look at the big picture and see where we've got to continue to improve."
