UWF Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. CBU To Open Conference Play

Argos look for series sweep Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

BOX SCORES: GAME 1 | GAME 2

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball swept its first GSC doubleheader of the season 10-0 and 4-1 vs. Christian Brothers Saturday at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos will go for the sweep Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

"Just proud of the team," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Finally getting on track here at home, getting back to .500. Hopefully tomorrow we can finish this series off and get above .500."

UWF pitching did not allow a walk all day. The ten runs in the first game of the day were a season-high for the Argos.

Game 1: Argos 10, Bucs 0 (8 innings)

UWF got off to a blistering start in the opener of the twin bill. The Argos teed off for five runs on four hits in the first inning vs. Bucs starter Gil Erwin. The team never looked back from there, reeling off another run in the fifth, three in the sixth, and a single tally in the eighth to trigger the conference run rule.

The offense was paced by Matthew Estrada. The Pensacola native turned in one of the most memorable games of his UWF career, going 3-for-4 with a sixth inning home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. His solo blast was his second of the season. Both have come at Jim Spooner Field.

Jared Hatch turned in a phenomenal performance on the mound, notching an eight-inning complete game in his NCAA starting debut. He limited Christian Brothers to just seven hits while throwing only 81 pitches. Hatch struck out five without issuing a walk. He moved to 1-1 on the season with the victory.

Erwin (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings. Matt Sullivan carded three doubles and three runs for the Argonauts. Trevor Payne finished with two hits and four RBIs.

Game 2: Argos 4, Bucs 1 (7 innings)

UWF got another strong start in the second game from Tony Rossi (1-2), who picked up the first win of his collegiate career. Rossi struck out eight without a walk. He scattered seven hits while allowing just one run (one earned). Daniel Floyd earned the first save of his NCAA career by retiring six straight in the sixth and seventh.

The Argonauts got on the board in the second on a safety squeeze bunt by Matthew Jones to score Robert Lopez. Lopez helped make it 2-0 with an RBI base hit to score Dylan Menhennett in the second.

UWF scored twice more in the third when Bryant Harris Jr. plated Matt Sullivan. A subsequent error helped Jones come in as well. Harris now has three RBIs over the last three games.

The Bucs committed five errors in the doubleheader while the Argos committed zero.

UWF (4-4) will look for the series sweep vs. CBU (1-6) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Tony Kucera (1-0) is expected to start for the Argonauts.

"We play a tough schedule," said Jeffcoat. "This is what we look for. The thing you look for as a coach is how a team responds, and they're starting to respond the way we want them to."
