Argos Start Final Homestand With Win vs. DSU

Jon Brown scores 25 points as UWF holds off Statesmen

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's basketball downed Delta State at home 73-70 Thursday evening at the UWF Field House. Jon Brown scored 25 points, and four Argos scored in double figures.

"Any time you play Delta, it's going to be a hard-fought game, it's going to be a physical game," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "I thought we fought them really well."

Jarrett Henderson added 19 points and eight boards. Henri Ventoniemi posted 12 points and five rebounds. Rashaan Benson recorded 12 points as well along with four assists. The starting five of Brown, Henderson, Ventoniemi, Benson and Maxwell Benoit combined to score all 73 points. Each played at least 35 minutes.

Brown scored 13 points in the first half as the Argos built a 32-31 lead at the break. Henderson added seven in the opening 20 minutes.

Benson came to life in the second half, scoring 11 points in the second half, including back-to-back threes five minutes after into the final period. The Argos led 69-60 with 1:45 to go. Stifling full court defensive pressure by Delta State helped the Statesmen shrink the gap to 69-67 with 0:45 to go. Brown proved clutch down the stretch though, knocking down four free throws inside of the final 30 seconds to seal the win. He finished 7-of-9 from the field and 11-of-13 from the line.

Benson added three steals to his 12 points and four assists. Henderson recorded a couple of assists plus a block in addition to his 19 points and eight rebounds.

Delta State (15-9, 11-6 GSC) was led by Brett Warner and Armon Benford, who each scored 14 points. UWF forced 11 Delta State turnovers. The Argos won the game despite being outrebounded 31-29.

The Argos (11-14, 7-10 GSC) will remain in Pensacola to battle Mississippi College Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The game will be part of the team's Senior Day festivities. The team will celebrate the careers of its three seniors, Benson, Ventoniemi, and Henderson, after the game.

"Senior Day is always an emotional day," said Burkhamer. "It's a really fun day, especially when you win."
