UWF Baseball Scores 10 Again, Sweeps Christian Brothers

Kucera tosses complete game, Argos look to Nova tomorrow

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball completed the three-game sweep of Christian Brothers Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field. Tony Kucera threw a complete game shutout, and Bryant Harris Jr. had three hits and three runs scored as the Argos ran away with a seven-inning 10-0 win.

"We finished off this weekend strong," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Very proud of Tony Kucera again. We had another day of no walks from the pitchers. He threw a complete game, and we continued to swing the bats."

UWF got the scoring going in the second with three runs vs. CBU starter Ryan Taylor. Dylan Menhennett picked up an RBI single, and Matthew Estrada plated two more with a two-RBI single of his own.

The Argos added six in the second. Trevor Payne highlighted the big inning with the first home run of his UWF career, a two-run blast to put UWF up 5-0. Matt Sullivan smacked his fourth double of the series later in the inning, driving in Menhennett in the process. Robert Lopez put the exclamation point on the inning with a three-RBI double to run the score to 9-0.

Harris Jr. went deep in the fourth to complete the scoring for UWF. The solo blast was his second of the season and second since Wednesday. He finished three-for-three with a home run, a double, a single, one RBI and three runs scored.

Kucera turned in one of the finest outings of his UWF career, throwing just 81 pitches over seven innings. He allowed just four singles, two of them on the infield. He struck out five without issuing a walk. UWF pitching struck out 20 without issuing a walk over 22 innings in the series.

Taylor (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing six hits and six runs (five earned) over 2.2 innings. Harris Jr., Estrada and Menhennett all finished with multi-hit games for UWF. The Argonauts outhit the Bucs 11-4. West Florida has now won four in a row.

UWF will look to stay hot Monday and Tuesday vs. No. 18/22 Nova Southeastern. The Argos open the two-game series vs. the Sharks tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.

"We've got to bring our A game tomorrow night," said Jeffcoat. "We've got them here at home, and hopefully we can keep this momentum going."
