Argo Offense Breaks Out In Doubleheader Sweep At AUM

Argos score 27 runs on 35 hits to win series at Auburn Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Argo bats enjoyed a banner day as UWF baseball swept a doubleheader at Auburn Montgomery Sunday 15-2 and 12-8. The Argos return home to begin an eight-game homestand Mar. 1. The wins helped the Argos claim their second straight GSC series.

"We swung the bats good today and drove in runs and got big hits with runners in scoring position," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat.

Matt Jones was particularly impressive at the plate, going off for seven hits, including a grand slam, and seven RBIs. He also scored seven runs. The Argos piled up 35 hits over the two games.

"That's the capability of the offense. I don't if you're always going to get that many runs, but I'm proud of the energy," said Jeffcoat. "We talked about that big time. I thought they out-energied us yesterday, but we flipped the script, and I'm proud of the team and the way they came out."

GAME 1: Argos 15, Warhawks 2

UWF got off to a rollicking start to the doubleheader as Jones, Mike Branche and Adam Imwalle all went deep to power the squad's biggest win of the year. The Argos reset their season-high with 21 hits. The home runs were the first in the Argo careers of Branche and Imwalle.

Jones' five hits matched a career-high. He drove in five and scored four runs. Trevor Payne racked up three hits and three RBIs. Matt Sullivan scored three times. Isaac Phillips piled up three hits, two runs and one RBI.

UWF got five strong innings of seven-hit, two-run ball from freshman Tony Rossi. He struck out four and walked two in improving to 2-2 on the season. Dylan Mills-Derouen threw three innings of scoreless relief behind him, stranding the bases loaded twice while striking out four and walking a pair. Hunter Lucas finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Troy Jones (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) over five innings. UWF tagged the Warhawk bullpen for 11 runs after Jones exited, including six in the ninth, a frame highlighted by home runs from Branche and Jones.

GAME 2: Argos 12, Warhawks 8

The Argos raced out to an 11-0 lead in Game 2 through three innings. Payne powered the early attack vs. Hank Scott (0-1), notching three more hits and three more RBIs. UWF added a single tally in the eighth, holding a resurgent AUM at bay in the late stages to seal the victory. The Argos recorded 14 hits.

Andrew Vaccacio (1-0) turned in one of the most impressive starts of the season for the Argo staff. The senior struck out eight of the first nine he faced and 12 overall in five innings to get his first UWF win.

Six different Argos carded multi-hit games. Jones racked up two RBIs and three runs scored. Phillips recorded two more hits and two runs scored. Bryant Harris Jr. picked up a pair of doubles, a run and an RBI. He finished with three RBIs in the twinbill.

UWF (8-6, 5-1 GSC) returns to action Mar. 1 vs. defending GSC champion Mississippi College. The game will be the first on an eight-game homestand for the Argos spanning Mar. 1-13.

"It's going to be another tough test for us," Jeffcoat said of the upcoming series vs. the Choctaws. "We've got to take advantage of being at home. Hopefully we can play some clean baseball, keep playing good defense and, obviously, keep the offense going."
