Brown Notches Fourth Double-Double, Argos Fall At West Georgia

UWF returns home Feb. 14 to face Delta State

CARROLLTON, Ga. – UWF men's basketball dropped its GSC battle vs. West Georgia 87-79 Saturday night at The Coliseum in Carrollton. Jon Brown scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

"I thought our guys really tried, but the third road game this week caught up with us.  We did not play with the same energy and effort that we've been playing with," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "We didn't get to shooters quickly enough and we were not able to get 50/50 balls tonight."

The Argos trailed 47-40 at the halftime break. Rashaan Benson netted 11 points and grabbed three rebounds and two steals in the first. Henderson scored 10 points and posted four boards.

The Argos surged in the second to close the gap to 62-59 with 11:24 remaining, but the Wolves reeled off a 9-2 run to open a 71-61 lead. Strong offensive play late from Brown helped the Argos trim the UWG lead to just 79-77 with 2:29 to play. The Wolves closed on a 6-0 run though to put the game out of reach.

"We shot 26 free throws and could have shot 20 more, and we missed some open shots late that we usually make.  We just didn't play quite well enough to beat a talented team on the road."

Brown finished with his fourth double-double of the year. He posted 10 rebounds and five assists in addition to the 28 points. He was 7-of-15 from the field and 7-of-9 from the line. Benson notched five rebounds and three steals in addition to his 19 points.

West Georgia was led by Marquill Smith, whom the Argos held to just 12 points in the Jan. 19 matchup between the two teams. He went off for 31 points Saturday evening. The Wolves shot 12-of-26 from three to power the win.

UWF will return to Pensacola for a three-game homestand starting Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. vs. Delta State. West Florida now trails West Georgia by three games for the eighth and final spot in the Gulf South playoff picture.
