PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 17/25 UWF baseball fell to No. 4 North Georgia 8-4 Tuesday night at Jim Spooner Field.
Robert Lopez finished with a season-high four RBIs. The teams close the two-game series Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
"That's a good North Georgia ballclub," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "You've really got to play a clean game and you absolutely have to pitch to have a chance to win. We didn't pitch well tonight."
The Nighthawks scored their first six runs with two outs. The team got to Argo starter
Jared Hatch for three of those runs in the first to take a lead they would never relinquish. Hatch fell to 1-2 on the season by allowing six runs (five earned) over 4.2 innings. He issued four of the Argo staff's seven walks and also hit two men.
Lopez picked up an RBI single in the first and a three-RBI double in the fifth that cut the UNG lead to 6-4. The Argos left two in scoring position later in the fifth. UWF and UNG each finished with 11 hits. UWF left eight baserunners while the Nighthawks left ten.
Matt Sullivan reached base four times. The senior outfielder finished with three hits and two runs scored. He has now hit safely in ten straight games.
Matthew Jones joined Sullivan and Lopez as the three Argos with a multi-hit night.
Austyn Wright (1-0) picked up the win for UNG. He was the second relief man behind starter Daniel McCrary. Wright spun three innings of one-hit, no-run ball to earn his first win of 2019.
The Argonauts (14-8, 8-1 GSC) and Nighthawks (16-5, 6-3 PBC) close the series Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The game will be the final of nine-game homestand for the Argonauts.
Daniel Floyd (3-0) is expected to start for UWF vs. Brock Carter (0-1) for UNG.
"Hopefully we can pitch better tomorrow night and give our team a better chance to win," said Jeffcoat. "I think our offense is right where we need to be. We competed. It's just hard to play behind the eight-ball."
