No. 16 UWF Baseball Earns Series Split vs. No. 4 North Georgia

Great start by Floyd powers midweek victory over Nighthawks

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Daniel Floyd earned his fourth win and Tony Kucera picked up his first save as No. 16 UWF baseball downed No. 4 North Georgia 7-3 to earn a series split at Jim Spooner Field Wednesday.

"The keys started with Daniel Floyd. He had a great start for us," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "We had a lot more quality at-bats tonight, and that's what I was pleased with."

Floyd (4-0) was brilliant over five innings. He allowed a tally in the first but stranded a pair of baserunners to cap the damage. He then posted four straight scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking one. He earned his fourth victory in his first start of the season.

The Argo bats struggled early but came to life in the fifth. The team posted three runs there after loading the bases vs. UNG starter Brock Carter (0-2). Matt Sullivan, Trevor Payne and Robert Lopez all picked up RBIs to power a 3-1 lead.

UWF added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly RBI by Dylan Menhennett and an RBI double by Isaac Phillips. Menhennett provided a key spark off the bench, entering in the fifth to pile up two hits and two RBIs.

Menhennett helped the Argos to quell a UNG comeback attempt in the seventh. After the Nighthawks lessened the lead to two in the top of the seventh, he stamped an RBI double after Adam Imwalle picked up an RBI on a sac fly in the bottom half.

Tony Kucera entered the game with two aboard in relief of Josh Pahlad in the ninth. He earned the save by getting a strikeout and inducing a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. The save was the first of his two-year Argo career. The win snapped a six-game losing streak vs. UNG for the UWF program.

The win pushed the Argos to 7-2 on the nine-game homestand. No. 16 UWF (15-8, 8-1 GSC) will head to Valdosta State (13-10, 4-4 GSC) this weekend for a three-game GSC series. The set will start Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. CT.

"It's key coming off this victory, taking a little momentum into the Valdosta State weekend," said Jeffcoat. "They've got a very good ballclub. They've got team speed, great arms on the mound. It's going to be a tough road test for us. Haven't had a lot of success over there, but we've got to figure it out. I like the confidence of this team. Looking forward to the challenge."
