UWF is 23-3 after 2-2 weekend against ranked opponents

STATS | VIDEO

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The second-ranked University of West Florida softball team will host Montevallo in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at the UWF Softball Complex, with action slated for a 3 pm start. While Montevallo is a full Gulf South Conference member, the games fall outside of the GSC schedule and will not count toward conference records.

How We've Been Lately
While UWF's winning streak ended at 17 games on Sunday against No. 4 North Georgia, the Argonauts still got strong performances around the diamond in Dahlonega.

The Argonaut pitching staff put together a 1.35 ERA over 26 innings and allowed batters to hit just .202, led by a terrific weekend from Grace Gilbert. Gilbert tossed a pair of complete games, going 1-1 with a 1.08 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 13 innings.

Offensively, UWF stole eight bases and posted a .358 on-base percentage with 13 extra-base hits over the weekend. Despite a slower offensive weekend than usual, West Florida still ranks 10th in Division II in batting (.361), 13th in on-base percentage (.434), and 20th in scoring (7.08 runs per game).

About Montevallo
The Falcons enter Wednesday with a 14-11 record and a 5-7 record in the Gulf South Conference, and they're coming off a 1-2 weekend against West Alabama. Montevallo has dropped five of its last six GSC games after suffering a sweep at Auburn Montgomery on March 1-2.

UM has some power up and down the lineup, with Haley Barnette and Mariel Bertossi each hitting over .400 and slugging over .550, and three other starters have hit .318 or better.

The team has a 2.77 ERA and has used a slew of pitchers to get the job done. Abbey Pratt, Kristina Manthei, Mychael McMillan, and Alexis Bonanno have each thrown at least 24 innings, and Pratt leads that group with a 2.30 ERA and four wins.

Wow Gracie Gilbert
Sophomore Grace Gilbert has allowed just five runs over her last seven appearances, in which time she is 6-1 with a 0.74 ERA over 38 innings. That stretch includes three complete game shutouts -- a total that ranks 10th in Division II this year.

Gilbert struck out a career-high eight batters against No. 4 North Georgia on Sunday, going the distance in a tough-luck loss. Prior to that, Gilbert struck out five batters in a shutout against Mississippi College, and she threw another shutout against Auburn Montgomery on February 22. Aside from a start against then-No. 18 Palm Beach Atlantic on February 9 when she gave up 5 runs, Gilbert has posted a 0.80 ERA over 11 appearances with only six earned runs allowed over 52.1 innings.

The Streak
West Florida wrapped up a 17-game winning streak that dated back to February 8, with a loss to No. 4 North Georgia. During that streak, UWF hit .389, averaged 8.0 runs per game, and had 57 extra-base hits. It was UWF's longest winning streak since the team won 23 in a row in 2017.
