Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. – No. 16/25 UWF baseball swept a doubleheader at Valdosta State Saturday. The Argos broke a tie game late to capture the first 6-5 and followed that with a 9-1 win to close the day.
"Good day at the ballpark, especially on the road here at Valdosta. It's a tough place to win," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat.
The Argos and Blazers close the series tomorrow afternoon. UWF will look for its first three-game series sweep at Valdosta State since 2006.
Game 1: Argos 6, Blazers 5
UWF took Game 1 6-5 thanks to an eighth inning solo home run by
Matt Sullivan. The blast, which broke a 5-5 tie, was, appropriately enough, the fifth of the season for the senior outfielder.
Tony Kucera got the start for UWF and allowed five runs (five earned) on ten hits. The senior lefty struck out one and walked three in a no-decision. After allowing four runs in the fifth and sixth, he was relieved by
Josh Pahlad, who would go on to get the win to move to 1-1 on the season following 1.1 scoreless innings.
Daniel Floyd earned his second save of the year by firing a scoreless eighth and ninth following Sullivan's go-ahead home run. Sullivan and
Isaac Phillips were the only Argos with multiple hits. UWF was outhit 11-7.
Phillips finished with two RBIs, a triple and a run scored.
Matthew Estrada had one hit and one RBI, as did
Mike Farnell. Farnell scored two runs.
Anthony Dahl (2-2) suffered the loss in relief for VSU. He was tagged by Sullivan for the go-ahead homer in the eighth. He finished with 2.2 innings of work for the day. The Blazers were led offensively by Josh Broughton, who golfed three hits and picked up two RBIs. The Blazers left ten on base, and the Argos stranded nine.
Game 2: Argos 9, Blazers 1 (7 innings)
UWF took an early lead vs. Valdosta starter Cooper Cain (2-3) in Game 2. The team took advantage of a
Dylan Menhennett RBI single followed by a Blazer error to open a 2-0 lead in the first.
The Argos added to the total in the third on an RBI walk with the bases loaded by
Adam Imwalle to score
Robert Lopez.
Tony Rossi (4-2) got the start for the Argonauts. He induced two double plays in the first two innings and finished with his second straight complete game. The freshman was brilliant all afternoon, limiting Valdosta State to just three hits and one run (one earned) while striking out two and working through five walks. He faced the minimum over the final three frames.
Matthew Estrada,
Trevor Payne, and
Robert Lopez combined for five RBIs in the last frame to open the final margin. UWF outhit Valdosta State 8-3 and took advantage of five Blazer errors.
"Tomorrow we need to come back with the same focus because you don't want to take anything for granted," said Jeffcoat. "Every game you play is meaningful, certainly in conference play and on the road... We've got to have the same hunger and the same intensity, and hopefully we can get off to a good start."
UWF (17-8, 9-1 GSC) will finish the series vs. the Blazers (13-12, 4-6 GSC) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. CT.
