PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF baseball completed a series sweep vs. No. 20 Mississippi College with 10-8 and 5-1 wins Saturday in a doubleheader at The Spoon. The wins helped the Argos to an 8-1 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
"It was a big day today, a big sweep against a good Mississippi College team," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Very proud of this team. They came with a lot of energy. They came determined."
Trevor Payne finished with four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader. The Argos have now won five straight games, all in conference play.
Game 1: Argos 10, Choctaws 8
UWF raced out to a 10-1 lead through four innings in Game 1 to help
Andrew Vaccacio earn his second win on the mound this season. Vaccacio was brilliant over seven innings, flummoxing the Mississippi College bats consistently. He allowed just two runs (one earned) while striking out six without a walk. The lefty improved to 2-0 on the season. The Argos have won each of his four starts this year.
Matt Sullivan reached five times in the game. He was great from the outset, hitting a home run on the first pitch of the day to Argo bats. The blast off Garrett Hollinghead (3-1) was his second of the season. Hollinghead would go on to take the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned) over three innings.
The Argos posted five runs in the second to blow the game open. Sullivan scored three times.
Trevor Payne finished with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs. UWF held on for the victory late, overcoming three total errors and withstanding six-run surge in the eighth and ninth to hold on. Mississippi College outhit UWF 12-9.
Game 2: Argos 5, Choctaws 1 (7 innings)
Mike Farnell provided a key two-RBI double in the first vs. star Choctaws lefty Ryan Lane to help the Argos to an early 2-0 lead in Game 2. Farnell finished the series with three hits and three RBIs.
The support would prove to be enough for the tandem of
Tony Rossi and
Daniel Floyd (2-0) on the mound. The starter Rossi lasted 3.1 innings, limiting the Choctaws to three hits and one run (one earned). He struck out three and walked three before Floyd finished the final 3.2 innings of the game. The relief man was masterful, striking out five without allowing a hit, a run, or a walk. Floyd earned the win to go to 3-0 in 2019.
Robert Lopez recorded a pair of doubles. Lopez, Payne,
Dylan Menhennett and
Joey Bend all finished with multi-hit games. Sullivan finished the doubleheader having reached base eight times. The one time he was held off the bases was a sacrifice fly RBI late in Game 2.
Lane (3-2) suffered the loss after allowing nine hits and five runs (five earned) in five-plus innings. Mississippi College (10-7, 3-3 GSC) managed just three hits for the game.
UWF (11-6, 8-1 GSC) will take on William Carey (4-10, 0-3 SSAC) Tuesday at Jim Spooner Field. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
"We used to play them all the time when we were both NAIA, so there's a long history there, but we haven't played them in years," said Jeffcoat of William Carey. "Looking forward to the opportunity."
