CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 12/23 UWF baseball went for the series sweep at Delta State Sunday afternoon. The Argos fell 16-6, but, following their doubleheader sweep of the Statesmen Saturday, still took the series between the top two teams in the GSC two games to one.
Matt Sullivan hit two home runs in the loss.
"I was glad with how we played yesterday to secure the series, but hopefully we learned a lesson today," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "We absolutely did not pitch today, just didn't get the job done on the mound."
Matt Sullivan continued a dominant series with two hits, including his sixth homer of the season, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Matthew Estrada also had two hits and one RBI.
Isaac Phillips finished with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Tony Rossi (4-3) suffered the loss on the mound for the Argonauts. The freshman lasted 2.0 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks. The relief corps of
Jared Hatch,
Jay Simpson,
Hunter Lucas and
Kirk Maddox combined to allow the final ten runs.
Delta State hit two home runs in the game. Hayden White, who had one of the two blasts, led the No. 2/6 Statesmen with five RBIs. Jake Barlow, who also went deep, finished with four RBIs. Dalton Minton improved to 5-1 on the season. The starter went six innings and earned the victory despite allowing six runs (six earned) on 10 hits.
UWF fell behind 3-0 in the first only to rally and tie the score on RBI base hits by Phillips, Estrada and
Trevor Payne early in the second. Delta State answered though with eight runs in the bottom of the second and bottom of the third. Sullivan's two-RBI blast in the fourth brought the Argos within 11-5, but the team would get no closer. The game finished in seven-innings due to the league-mandated run rule. Sullivan went deep again in the sixth for a solo blast to bring his total to seven home runs for the season.
UWF (21-9, 13-2 GSC) now leads Delta State (20-7, 12-5) by two games in the race for first place in the Gulf South. The Argonauts head to Montevallo (15-14, 12-6 GSC) for a Wednesday matchup. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
