PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 17 UWF baseball won its seventh straight game Friday vs. Embry-Riddle. The Argos downed the Eagles 4-1 behind a strong start from
Tony Kucera.
"Just proud of getting that first victory again," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Another quality start from
Tony Kucera. Goes right out of the gate and gives us really six solid innings."
Kucera allowed just one run over six innings. He scattered four hits while striking out three and walking two. He faced just 13 batters over the first four innings to set the tone.
The Argos benefited from four Embry-Riddle errors, the first of which came in the first. After a poor throw to first base following a third strike helped
Robert Lopez reach,
Mike Farnell cashed in with an RBI single. The RBI was his fifth in the last three games.
"Today again we talked about it in pregame," said Jeffcoat. "Through this playing ball well, we've been getting on the board first and we were able to do that finally today, not until the fourth inning, but our M.O. has been getting on the board early."
UWF took advantage of three more errors in the fifth to add three more runs.
Matt Sullivan and
Trevor Payne each picked up RBIs. Sullivan's was his seventh in the last five games. Payne's was his 10th in the last seven games.
Jared Hatch turned in two innings of scoreless relief before passing the ball to
Dylan Mills-Derouen in the ninth. Mills-Derouen allowed got two outs and allowed two baserunners before exiting with an injury.
Josh Pahlad entered the game and allowed a single before notching a strikeout looking vs. pinch hitter Colin Ludwig to leave the bases loaded and end the game.
Embry-Riddle outhit UWF 8-7. The Argonauts committed just one error though. The win pushed
Tony Kucera to 4-0 this season. The save was the third for Pahlad. Daniel Agramont (2-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles despite not allowing an earned run.
UWF (13-6, 8-1 GSC) and Embry-Riddle (9-8, 3-3 SSC) will close the series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
Andrew Vaccacio (2-0) is expected to start Game 1.
Tony Rossi (2-2) is expected to start Game 2.
