No. 17 UWF Baseball Takes Series vs. Embry-Riddle

Argos get a complete game from Tony Rossi to seal the three-game set

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 17 UWF baseball won its fourth straight three-game series Saturday at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos dropped the first game of a doubleheader vs. Embry-Riddle 7-5 before rebounding with a series-clinching 11-4 win to close the day.

UWF has now won eight of its last nine games. Tony Rossi (3-2) pitched the first complete game of NCAA career to help the Argos to the finale win.

Game 1: Eagles 7, Argos 5

Embry-Riddle outhit the Argonauts 14-7 in the first game of the day. UWF built a 4-1 lead after four innings, fueled by a two-run homer from Matt Sullivan. His blast in the fourth was his fourth of the season.

In the fifth, the Eagles exploded for five runs against relief man Jay Simpson (1-2). The Ellisville, Miss. native suffered the loss after relieving starter Andrew Vaccacio, who allowed one run in four innings.

UWF nearly recovered from the deficit in the eighth. Matthew Jones went deep on the first pitch of the penultimate frame, but the Argos ultimately left Adam Imwalle on third as a potential tying run. The Eagles added an insurance tally in the ninth to seal the win. The home run was the second of the season for Jones.

Daniel Floyd carded 4.1 innings of three-hit relief. He allowed one unearned run in that span while striking out two and walking two. Mike Farnell finished with three hits, including a pair of doubles.

The loss snapped a season-best seven game win streak for the Argonauts. Garrett Goodall (2-0) picked up the win after three innings of one-run relief work. Dominic Jeancola notched his second save of the year for the Eagles.

Game 2: Argos 11, Eagles 4

UWF recovered well in the series finale, running away with a seven-run victory. UWF scored five times on five hits in the first vs. Eagles starter Payton Rice (0-4) to open an early advantage.

Matthew Estrada paced the club with three hits. Imwalle scored three times and picked up three RBIs. Isaac Phillips registered a pair of hits, a run and an RBI. Phillips and Sullivan each had a double.

Rossi earned the win to move to 3-2 on the season. He loaded the bases in the first with no one out but allowed just one run. He allowed three runs (all scored with two outs) in the second but did not allow another tally over the next five innings. He struck out four and walked three en route to the win. Embry-Riddle (10-9, 3-3 SSC) was led by Kyle Guttveg, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Argos (14-7, 8-1 GSC) will look to stay hot Tuesday and Wednesday at Jim Spooner Field vs. North Georgia (15-4, 6-2 PBC). Both games are slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
