No. 5/12 UWF Baseball Splits Abbreviated Series At UAH

Argos return home Tuesday to face Spring Hill

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – No. 5/12 UWF baseball split a doubleheader at Alabama Huntsville Saturday. The Argos dropped Game 1 7-6 in 11 frames before rebounding with 18 hits as part of an 11-4 Game 2 win.

"Proud of how the team competed today, just let one slip away from us in the ninth of Game 1. Swung the bats much better," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Just have to give everything we've got the last 4 home games this week and finish strong."

The Argos will return home Tuesday to take on Spring Hill College at 6:00 p.m. and then close the regular season with a three-game home series vs. West Alabama Apr. 26-27.

Game 1 (11 innings): Chargers 7, Argos 6

Tony Kucera got the start for the Argos in Game 1 and got a no-decision after 6.2 innings of work. He scattered nine hits while allowing three runs (three earned) and striking out six.

The Argos trailed 2-1 after the first inning and 3-1 after five but rallied to score twice in the sixth and three times in the eighth to build a 6-3 lead. The Chargers stormed back for three runs of their own in the ninth vs. Daniel Floyd before ultimately winning the game on a walkoff single by Steven Milke in the 11th.

Jared Middleton (1-2) took the loss for the Argos after allowing the walkoff single. Parker Henson (2-0) received the win for Alabama Huntsville in relief.

Matthew Estrada joined Matt Sullivan as the two Argos to reach six times in a single game this season. The sophomore piled up four hits and two walks. Isaac Phillips finished with three hits and an RBI. Dylan Menhennett posted two hits and two runs scored plus an RBI. Robert Lopez recorded two hits, two runs and an RBI. Trevor Payne had two hits. The Argos outhit the Chargers 16-14.

Game 2: Argos 11, Chargers 4

Andrew Vaccacio started on the mound in Game 2 and was brilliant. He struck out 11, just one off his season-high, in seven innings to move to 5-1 on the season.

The Argo bats struck for four runs in the first, an inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Menhennett. The junior transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College would go on to finish with a career-best five RBIs.

Seven Argos finished with multi-hit games. Sullivan carded two RBIs. Lopez finished with two hits and two RBIs. Joey Bend racked up three hits, including his first home run of the season, in one of his best all-around performances in an Argo jersey.

Vaccacio's complete game performance was his fifth of the season. The senior lefty lowered his ERA to 1.95. Dylan Murphy (5-3) suffered the loss for UAH (25-17, 15-10 GSC) after allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 3.2 innings.

UWF (29-14, 19-7 GSC) will return home for its final homestand of the regular season. First pitch Tuesday vs. Spring Hill (23-15, 15-3 SIAC) is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field.
