FRIDAY AT 11 AM CT VS TAMPA: WATCH | LIVE STATS
TAMPA, Fla. – No. 8 UWF baseball opened the South Regional with a wild 5-4 win over Nova Southeastern Thursday in Tampa. The Argos scored four times in the ninth without recording an out to earn a walkoff victory.
"We just kept plugging," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "You couldn't be prouder of this team. That's what you've got to do."
Andrew Vaccacio got the start for the Argonauts and twirled six innings of three-hit, one-run ball while striking out six and walking three.
Tony Rossi (5-3) would end up with the win for the Argos after inducing a double play with the bases loaded in the ninth to keep the score 4-1.
UWF erased an early 1-0 Nova lead when
Robert Lopez walked in the second, stole a base and scored on a two-strike, two-out RBI base hit by
Joey Bend.
Nova scored three times in the seventh and eighth vs. relief man
Daniel Floyd before the Argonauts found the late-inning magic that has now spelled four walkoff victories (including two in postseason play).
Isaac Phillips led off the ninth with a single down the right field line.
Adam Imwalle then singled, and Phillips was able to move all the way to third when the ball was mishandled in the outfield. Lopez then walked before
Mike Farnell walloped a 2-RBI double to make it 4-3.
Bend followed by laying down a safety squeeze bunt. The Sharks tried for the out at first but threw the ball away, allowing Lopez to score. Farnell's pinch runner
Dylan Menhennett would score two batters later on a wild pitch to seal the 5-4 win.
Matthew Estrada finished with two hits. Brock Minich (2-1) suffered the loss for Nova Southeastern. The Sharks outhit the Argonauts 10-7.
The No. 8 Argonauts (37-16) will take on No. 3 Tampa (37-14) tomorrow at the UT Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. CT.
