TAMPA, Fla. – No. 8 UWF baseball completed its 2019 season Friday night in Tampa. The Argos dropped decisions vs. No. 3 Tampa by a final of 9-1 and Nova Southeastern by a final of 5-3. The games were the final of the South Regional for the Argonauts, who wrap the year 37-18.
The banner year included the program's second regular season GSC crown in the last four years, six All-Gulf South Conference selections and four All-South Region selections. Lefty pitcher
Andrew Vaccacio was named the GSC Pitcher of the Year.
Trevor Payne reached base in both games vs. Tampa and Nova Southeastern to improve his program record of consecutive games reaching base to 49.
In the 12 p.m. game Friday,
Tony Kucera (8-3) limited the Tampa offense to three runs (three earned) over five innings, but the Argos failed to get much going vs. Spartan starter Keven Pimentel (11-2), who got the win after firing seven shutout innings. Matt Jones and Payne each notched two hits. The Argos got on the board in the ninth on an RBI double by Jones.
UWF then took on Nova Southeastern in an elimination game at 7:00 p.m.
Robert Lopez put the team ahead in the second with a two-run homer. The blast was his seventh of the season and put him at 21 homers for his UWF career. He is one of just five players in program history with 20 career homers.
The Sharks responded though, scoring four times in the fourth to take the lead.
Matthew Estrada picked up the other RBI for the Argos with a base hit in the fifth to score Jones.
Starter
Jared Hatch (1-5) took the loss vs. NSU after allowing four runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings. The Argos committed five errors in the game. Devin Meyer threw a complete game for the Sharks to move to 7-3 on the season.
The No. 8 Argonauts remain in the national top ten. UWF has been ranked in the national top ten for ten straight weeks.
